DNA vaccines: Viral Antigen Targeting by Genetically Engineered Chimeric Molecules
(Bulgaria)Research Areas:
The main research interests of The Laboratory of Experimental Immunology are directed to autoimmunity and autoimmune diseases, allergy and immune-modulators development. The work is focused on the development of new approaches for specific suppression of pathological immune cells as well as new vaccine design through genetic engineering and protein molecules. Another topic of interest is the development of humanized mouse models of some of the most affecting human diseases (allergies, autoimmune diseases - systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis). Widely covered in the activity of the team are studies on immunomodulating activity of Black sea gastropods and garden snail proteins as adjuvants for bacterial and viral vaccines, their anti-tumor effects. The well trained and highly qualified team includes two post-docs, three PhD students, two Graduate Students and four students. National and international students are encouraged to apply for positions in the lab.

CBM's aim is to become a leading provider of preclinical and clinical services in Central Europe and beyond. Its expertise includes most -omics technologies for biomarker discovery (genomics, proteomics, metabonomics) complemented by a highly qualified bioinformatics team performing both routine services, as well as custom and integrated research projects. The preclinical characterization of novel theranostic targets is ensured by a comprehensive, state-of-the-art facility for in vivo and in vitro optical imaging studies, and the validation provided by a clinical setting is ensured by CBM facilities located at the Oncological Reference Centre of Aviano, thus permitting the completion of comprehensive pharmacogenetics, pharmacoproteomics and pharmacokinetics studies.

Improving Public Health Professionals On Narrative Competencies Raising Awareness Through Education
(Italy)Research Areas:
Narrations matter in medicine. “Narrative competence” is a key element of the medical knowledge and of its daily practices. However, in European medical academia and in the Public Health sector, there is a clear lack of specific training and updating on narrative competences for medical and health care professionals. Why? Empirical researches evince that Narrative Based Medicine (NbM) produces meaningful changes in the organisation of health service delivery. Patients’ satisfaction increases, health care professional gains privilege access to clinical (and extra) data, medical performances are highly improved. Yet, in our days, “narrative competences” training courses and pedagogical tools are not widespread and welcomed by health care providers. By adopting a inter- and multi-disciplinary approach, this project will shed light to this central issue and implement innovative educational paths to increase narrative competencies in order to ameliorate doctor-patients relationships and intra-medical professionals communicative strategies.

ANTISENSE
(Italy)Research Areas:
Autoimmune thyroid diseases (ATD) and Type 1 diabetes (T1D) are the most common autoimmune endocrine disorders. They occur frequently together in the same individual. This disease combination is denominated as autoimmune polyendocrine syndrome type 3 variant (APS3v). Family and population studies have shown that APS3v syndrome has a strong genetic background. Whole genome and candidate gene approaches have identified several gene variations that are present in both ATD and T1D.
